Question by John: Has Quickbooks make bookkeeping and accounting easier?
I am in the process of starting my own bookkeeping and small accounting business from home or office. I want to learn Quickbooks but feel that if used Quickbooks it would make my billable hours significantly less than if I did the books manually. By using Quickbooks financial statements are a click away. This would eliminate billable hours. Any thoughts?….With you accounting professionals?

Any customer who learned you are doing books manually would leave, because the customer would want an accountant who is efficient. You can not increase billable hours be being slow and old-fashioned; you can increase billable hours by helping a client in other ways. You might be able to recommend a way for the customer to save money (he’s paying you to avoid having to pay accounting staff himself). You might ask if he’s paying too much for office supplies, or use your knowledge to help in other ways. As a professional in a service field, you need to change your attitude toward clients — they don’t exist to pay you more money, you exist to help them in a way they want to pay you for!

I’m thinking of getting a degree in accounting. Math isn’t my strong point but I’m very organized and efficient when it comes to work. Does bookkeeping require a lot of complex math or is it just a matter of staying organized?

This was gleaned from a survey of four groups of accountants and auditors in North Carolina, namely, African-American females, African-American males, Caucasian females and Caucasian males.
