Installing software on external hard drive?
Hi, everyone!!
I run a small business from my home (just me, no employees), and purchased the Quicken Home & Business software to help me manage the books.
Can i install this program on an external hard drive and utilize it from there?? I am concerned that I would lose all the bookkeeping data for my business if my laptop ever got infected with a virus and had to be “wiped clean” (i.e returned to factory settings).
But I’m trying to avoid having to pay for backup storage online. I’d rather backup the data myself. Is installing the program on an external hard drive a viable option? Or is there another way?

Ehh, I wouldn’t install the software to the drive. I would just make the drive where you save and backup the data files from the software to.
If you installed the software to the ext HD and your laptop crashes, you can’t just pop the ext HD to another computer and expect to run the program. It doesn’t work like that. When you install a program…even on a different drive…there are still files and settings installed on your local drive in Windows.
If you save your data files to it then you can reinstall the software on another computer and point the program to the data files and continue on your merry way.
