Which is better as a career Human Resources or Bookkeeping?
I’m currently looking into going back to school. I have no idea what i want to become. I thought about getting either a diploma or AA just to to see if I would like a career before spending lots of time and money on college. I just found out about a program offered through a community agency that offers free job training for fast growing careers in our area. The areas that I was interested in are Bookkeeping and Human Resources.
Just a little background on me
I’m 27 married and have 5 children. I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past 4 years. I’m ready to get back into the job market. Before I had only worked in fast food. I would like to be able to work normal business hours with holidays off. I don’t mind working weekends if i have too. I would like to have the option of working full or part time.
If you can think of other careers please suggest them.
The nice thing about both of the careers you mentioned is that there is always a need for them. Human Resources staff is needed even in times of unemployment to help the employees who are still working and to assist the laid-off employees in their transition. Accounting is always a high-need area, since even when there is little money, someone needs to keep track of it. Other areas that seem to always have a need are Child Care and Nursing.
Think about the things you do as a stay-at-home mom that you particularly enjoy. Do you balance the household finances? Do you create budgets for yourself for groceries, your children’s clothes and supplies? Do you enjoy doing this? Then maybe you would enjoy Accounting. Do you enjoy planning activities for your kids? Maybe you would enjoy Child Care. And so on.
Do a search in your area on job boards like Craigslist, Monster.com, Careerbuilder.com, your local classified ads, etc. and see what jobs seem to be common.
Take the free job training through the community agency, and you may end up finding something that you truly enjoy. Once you have gone through the free training, enroll in your local community college. Go talk to a counselor at the college and they can help you to determine both what careers are available in that field and also what your education path will be to achieve that goal. There are scholarships for “Displaced Homemakers”, i.e., people who have been stay at home moms and who now want to get into the workforce.
Good luck!
