What to do about a counterfeit cashier’s check? Do I report it?
So there was an add in my local paper about an online bookkeeping job. I emailed the guy my resume. A few days later I received an email from his “associate” that the position had been filled but they had a secret shopper position open in my area. I would get paid $200 for my participation, all I had to do was email him my information like name, address, phone number, birth date, and hours I am available. Well today I received in a ups package a Cashier’s check for $2800. My sister, whom has worked in a bank for over 6 years, told me it was counterfeit as there was no water mark. So I threw it away and email what I did to the guy.
My question is, should I report this to my police department or to anyone in particular? Or do I just keep it in the trash/shred it? I’m not going to cash it or anything, even though I would love and could use the money lol.
Thanks in advance!
The right thing to do was take it to the bank and explain to them what happened. They would confirm to you it is fraudulent, and you can file a police report. Do you have the envelope it came in ? most likely the return address on it and name is fake. So much of this is going on these days, so even if you file a report nothing would come out of it.
