Question by Eddy Dumay: How can I get a bookkeeping position with no experience?
Hello,

I recently received my bookkeeping certification and is know looking for a bookkeeping position. However, most of the positions Ive looked at require some experience. How do I go about landing a bookkeeping position or a related position in order to build experience?

Thank you in advance!

It’s normal for companies to state they require experience otherwise, they would be inundated with crank calls from totally unqualified people.

You say that you already have your bookkeeping certification. That’s a definite plus.

I’d suggest that you call the companies anyway. Very often, companies call in applicants based simply on gut feeling – if they feel you’re a polite, courteous person, they might like to meet you. Businesses are more than willing to give a chance to good people to learn the ropes. When you meet them you can be truthful about your lack of experience and ask what the job entails. It’s a 2 – way street anyway. If you feel you can’t handle the job, you can always decline.

Another more common alternative would be to work part-time or freelance for small businesses (local grocer, restaurant, car workshop etc) to get some working time under your belt.

Don’t worry… experience comes soon enough. Just keep plugging along.
