Here is a website from the US Occupational Outlook Handbook: www.bls.gov/oco and can type into search box ‘accountant’ or ‘bookkeeper’. I believe that an accountant has had to have a bachelor’s degree(?) and has more job opportunities as a cpa (certified public accountant) though the test is supposed to be very difficult and people typically have to take it more than once just like the software engineer certification exam and law school exam (and I’m sure others).
Please don’t sign up with one of those diploma mill schools such as University of Phoenix, Devry or Strayer University or Penn Foster or Stratford Career Institute. I don’t believe that any of those schools are looked at as respectable school curriculums and may not even be accredited by the Department of Education or such.

In my honest opinion – neither.
I have looked into the courses at our junior college for a certificate and an associate degree in accounting and they are both lacking.
The associate degree is filled with secretarial classes and to me seems like a waste of time and money. The certificate program seems much better, but I feel you can get by with much less.
You need to know basic accounting – a couple courses should do. You will need to know Excel – this is a computer spreadsheet program that almost all offices use. Payroll accounting is also a good course to take and a course or two in QuickBooks.
Just because you have an associates degree doesn’t mean you know what you are doing. I have found that actual experience is the best way to learn. Taking these courses will give you a starting foundation and get your foot in the door. You will also find out if this is a career that interests you.
Check out http://www.aipb.com, the website for the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. They have great books that teach you what bookkeepers need to know and you can even become a certified bookkeeper. I think this would get you further than an associates degree. I have several of their books.
I would definately take the courses I mentioned earlier, then follow up with AIPB.
