Question by ledgerlady: How can I partner with CPAs to get clients for my bookkeeping business?
I have worked in the Accounting field for 9 years. I have been an Accounting Specialist, Staff Accountant, and Controller. I have already developed a website for my business, have a business phone, and business cards. But that’s where it ends. I’ve been researching rates here and elsewhere online and I have a fairly good idea of what to charge.

Is it possible to partner with local CPAs to get clients for my business?

Probably not but I see why you would want to. It seems easy and you’re comfortable with the notion of talking to other CPA’s about sending you business. Trouble is, you’re the competition. Believe it or not, that’s how they’ll see you so this idea is out. Instead you need to get out, network with groups around town and sell yourself. This is an uncomfortable idea that you may likely reject and it is normal. Accounting types are usually repelled at the idea of going to to make sales and marketing calls but that’s exactly what you have to do. You have to sell yourself and your business. Nobody else can do that for you. It will probably be the hardest part of starting and building your business. However, if you can do it, you will establish quickly and grow in the coming years. Look to business network groups that meet weekly or monthly for breakfast, lunch or happy hour. You need to hit at least 3-5 every week for the next few months. Eventually you can cut that down to 1-2 per week but probably not in the first year. Think of it this way: You get to do people’s taxes but you get PAID for going to those meetings and schmoozing with people to make connections.
