Question by beebo: has anyone tried to start a bookkeeping business before and were you sucessful?
I am trying to start a bookkeeping business but am having no luck. How can I get my name out there for someone looking for a bookkeeper or accountant to handle their books?

I have a website detailing what I do. How can I advertise without killing my bottom line?

Like any business, it will take time to build. I do, however, have some ideas for you:

    * If you work from home get a second phone line for your business so you are listed in the yellow pages of your phone book under “Bookkeeping Services”

    * Send out professional looking three fold brochures to businesses advertising for bookkeepers in the classified ads in your local paper

    * Join your local Chamber of Commerce – new business might need a bookkeeping service

    * Advertise in a low-cost paper (we have a free paper that comes out once a week). Many times painters, plumbers, etc, advertise here and chances are there is a small business needing your services.

    * Check with the local CPA firms to see if they have clients that need a bookkeeper. Not all CPA firms offer bookkeeping.

    * Visit small businesses and hand out your brochure and business card

    * Hang a professional looking flyer on a board at your local grocery store

    * Become QuickBooks certified and get listed on their website

Getting the work is the hardest part! Good luck!
